Why Does My Boat Turn Hard to The Left?
Boats boast of existence for thousands of years. You can only trace most modern boats back to the 17th century with the invention of the paddle-wheel steamboat.
Because of this, they are a huge part of many cultures worldwide and are one of mankind’s best inventions.
Your boat turns hard to the left because of an improper installation of an engine key piece or unbalanced lift differential on the rudder(tab angles). In this case, a faulty angle needs readjustment to fix this problem. An engine key piece is a minor component of the boat’s engine that connects two parts of the machinery.
The engine key piece keeps these two pieces in sync to function properly. When installed correctly, the angle can prevent your boat from turning hard to one side or stop working altogether.
To adjust the engine key to its correct angle, you need to:
- Use pliers or a wrench to take off the spark plug from the engine key piece.
- Check to see where the needle is pointing. Make sure that it points straight up and down.
- Disconnect the wires from each side of the key piece under each cylinder head cover by removing them from their current positions in their respective holders. The wires will have ribbons connecting them to each side of the key piece.
- Remove the screws holding the engine key piece in place.
- Unplug the wires from each side of the key piece under each cylinder head cover.
- Please turn on the ignition, and have someone hold or maintain some control to ensure that you do not break any parts during this procedure so that when everything works correctly, it does not collide with anything and cause damage.
- Remove the engine key piece and reach inside the cylinder head cover to adjust the angle. The specific angle will rely on the make and model of the boat.
- Install a new spark plug in the hole from which you removed the old spark plug. Replace the wires and screws that held it in place.
What Causes a Boat to Be Hard to Steer?

How Do You Solve a Stiff Boat Steering Wheel?
First, remove the nuts holding the steering wheel, then, with a wrench or socket, loosen all the nuts on the backside of the surface mount “screw” mounting plate. This will allow you to rotate your steering wheel to remove it.
Next, once you have removed the screws and most of the plastic parts on each side (watch out for some electrical wiring), you can use your screwdriver or wrench to unscrew each nut holding each set of 4 cables on either side.
This will allow the cables to hang out, and you can pull them off one by one. When you remove all the wires, you can use a razor blade to cut all four cables on each side.
After the cutting, pull the wires out of each cable. After that, take your Allen wrench and remove the two nuts (and corresponding bolts) from each cable by hand.
Using your socket wrench or screwdriver to remove this from your steering wheel. Clean these parts off with some Windex or water while you’re at it to get rid of any dirt.
When all the dirt comes off, take your sandpaper and sand your new cables down. You’ll want to sand them all until they are shiny and smooth. Put some grease onto your cables.
You can use duct tape, wire ties, or a gorilla ring (whatever you find) to hold the cables on each side of your steering wheel.
When you’re done, put the nuts and bolts back on (tightly), and screw them back in. Once everything tightens up, use a little grease to hold the cables in place. The result should be a nice shiny steering wheel.
Do Trim Tabs Affect Steering?
